Make your life easier with an overlock Work steps
The name overlock is fairly self-explanatory. It describes the movement of the thread. This special sewing machine type uses the lower thread to lock the upper thread into position. This means that the stitch cannot come loose. Every overlock has two needles and two hooks, so you can use different types of stitching.
The ‘over’ part of the word indicates that the machine stitches above an edge. An overlock sewing machine makes sewing so much easier. It sews fabric together, overlocks and trims the excess fabric neatly – all in one step. You will save a lot of time. And you can look forward to some professional seam and design results!
When is an overlock machine a worthwhile investment?
If you are enthusiastic about sewing and would like to make your sewing projects look more professional, an overlock sewing machine is definitely worthwhile for you. You will quickly produce beautiful and neat inner seams with an overlock. The sewing tool is specially designed for fabric edges. It can process these quickly and precisely. A standard sewing machine isn’t able to do this. Around 60% of all sewing work is made easier and more professional with an overlock.
However, an overlock sewing machine cannot replace a standard sewing machine. It focuses purely on sewing fabrics together and overlocking them. You need a normal sewing machine for sewing on buttons, making buttonholes and adding adornments. Embroidery also requires a special machine. At W6, we offer the following combinations: A sewing and embroidery machine in one.
Place professional seams
For a long time, overlock machines were only used in industrial sewing. More and more private and amateur sewers are interested in this machine. Place professional inner seams with ease on various fabrics such as cotton, stretch materials or wafer-thin fabrics. Depending on the model, our W6 overlock machines have up to 18 sewing and overlocking programmes to choose from, as well as trendy rolled hems, gatherings and overlocks with gimp thread.
In general, our machines have a four-thread system that you can use to produce sewing projects with two to four threads. If you only use two threads, you save a lot of money on thread. You can also decide whether you wish to overcast with one needle or two.
The four-thread stitch
This stitch is often also called the composite stitch, 4-thread overlock stitch or imitated safety stitch. With this stitch, you can generally sew and overlock all materials. However, the four-thread stitch is especially suitable for stretch or coarse fabrics.
The three-thread stitch
With the three-thread stitch, you can overlock a vast number of materials. Lesser used closing seams such as side seams for blouses, shirts or polo shirts can also be combined with this stitch.
The rolled hem
The rolled hem is normally one of the three-thread stitches. However you can also make it with two threads. Above all, a rolled hem is for overlocking light and fine fabrics. Clear examples are silk scarves or the bottom hem of wedding dresses.
The flatlock stitch
The flatlock stitch can also be sewn with two or three threads. You can use it on a fold or as a joining stitch.
The two-thread stitch
You can overlock light fabrics using a two-thread stitch. However, this stitch is rarely used as three and four-thread stitches are more stable. A special type of this stitch is the double chain stitch. As the name already suggests, the double chain stitch looks a bit like a chain from underneath. From above, it looks like a straight stitch produced by a sewing machine. This stitch is used especially for non-stretch materials such as denim or upholstery fabrics. The double chain stitch also provides fantastic possibilities as a decorative stitch.
The safety stitch
This stitch is made up of two separate stitches. The combination of the double chain stitch for durability, and a two or three-thread edge overlock stitch gives you an extremely stable stitch.
Features of the W6 overlock sewing machines
You will find two models in our range: the classic – W6 N 454 D overlock – and its big sister – W6 N 656 D free-arm overlock. The former is also suitable for overlock beginners. The free-arm overlock has additional practical functions that you can use to sew and overlock in a professional manner.
Our W6 overlock machines work with a maximum of four threads. Two knives, upper and lower, ensure the fabric is trimmed neatly. If you do not want to cut the fabric, you can simply switch off the knife function.
On the W6 N 454 D overlock, you will find attributes such as a freely adjustable differential feed and adjustable presser foot pressure which really optimise the sewing work. It’s easy to set the stitch length using a controller. The threading paths are clear and indicated using different colours, which allows you to place the threads without difficulty. If you wish to switch to a rolled hem quickly, the machine also has a switch.
The W6 N 656 D free-arm overlock awaits with its many advantageous features. The quick-release lock for the thread stand and for the spool stand ensure that the thread runs securely. You can switch very easily between normal stitch and rolled hem – without changing the needle plate. Thanks to the LED HQ lighting and left hook threading aid, you can thread even faster. The waste bin neatly collects any trimmed fabric and thread remnants. You can even fit the lower gripper of this machine with bulk thread and decorative thread, thanks to the special thread guide. The vast range of programmes makes the model versatile. And with a high stitch speed of maximum 1300 stitches per minute, the machine stays very quiet.

Of course, along with your new overlock machine, we also provide compatible accessories so that you can get started with your first project straight away.
